Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently put the finishing touches on its UFC 258 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which takes place TONIGHT (Sat., Feb. 13, 2021) by way of ESPN+ from inside its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlining duties will be handled by welterweight rivals Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns, who battle for “The Nigerian Nightmare’s” 170-pound belt. In UFC 258’s co-main event, women’s flyweight fighting sensation Maycee Barber looks for a return to form against the rough-and-tumble Alexa Grasso.

Round 1: Low kicks from Heinisch to start, then a quick level change. Gastelum hits a granby roll to get back to his feet and look for his own takedown. Heinisch defends with a kimura, unable to keep Gastelum’s arm bent as he cranks. Gastelum pops his arm out a minute in and looks for the back. He tries a lift, can’t get him down. Nice takedown, has to fight off the kimura again. He’s on top in mount, though, and he waits it out. Heinisch uses the fence to roll free and separate. Right hand lands for him. Low kick from Gastelum. Two minutes to go.

Heinisch tries a head kick, takes a combo. Gastelum puts him on the fence. He changes levels, can’t keep him down. Nice lift, still can’t establish. One minute to go. Gastelum tries a left hand on the break. Body kick connects. Low kick from Heinisch in return. They trade right hands in the center. 10-9 Gastelum.

Round 2: Trading low kicks to start. Overhand right from Heinisch. Gastelum on the front food this round, eats a left hook. One minute in. Well-timed flying knee lands for Heinisch, but Gastelum takes him down into half guard. Heinisch makes it back up against the fence. Two minutes in. Gastelum lands an elbow on the break. Two minutes in. Heavy top pressure by Simon. Kelleher looks for a kimura, gets to his knees. Simon tries to spin to the back, avoids a guillotine and they separate. That cut’s really bothering Kelleher. Two minutes to go.

Simon tries a 3-2, eats a low kick. Great reactive double-leg puts him back on top in guard. He gets to half guard, hunts the arm triangle again. Kelleher makes it back to his feet with a minute to go. Simon shoots, denied. Kelleher tries to hop in with a knee. 10-9 Simon.

Round 1: Pitolo comes out swinging, firing kicks and heavy punches that prompt Marquez to tie up. Pitolo reverses on the fence. Brutal elbow and body shot, then a takedown into half guard that avoids a guillotine. One minute in. Short left hands from Pitolo. Strong control so far. Two minutes in. Looking for the back on the way up. Two minutes to go.

Holding onto the rear waist lock. Nice trip, can’t retake the back. Marquez turns to face him. One minute to go. Marques tries a whizzer throw, then wraps up a guillotine as Pitolo stands. Good defense by Pitolo to pop his head out. Hard punches by Marquez on the break. 10-9 Pitolo.

Round 2: Marquez pressing forward. They trade right hands, good uppercut by Pitolo and a head kick attempt. Pitolo takes one to the nards. They get right back to slugging when they resume. Marquez slips and Pitolo jumps on him, looking for the back again. Knee to the body. Marquez trying to turn into him, gets dragged to the mat. Back up, back down. Pitolo tries to re-shoots behind some heavy strikes and Marquez wraps up the guillotine again. Pitolo turns to his knees to get out, prompting Marquez to land some heavy shots from turtle. He tries to take the back and Pitolo shrugs him off over the top, moving quickly to mount. Marquez manages to regain half guard. 10-9 Pitolo.

Round 3: Hard low kick from Pitolo to start. Marquez backs him up, lands against the fence. Return fire from Pitolo. Hard counter hook. Low kick briefly sends Marquez to a knee. Marquez with some good shots against the fence, eats a left hook. One minute in. Continuing to exchange as Marquez presses forward. Knee to spinning elbow and he looks for the guillotine again, then hurts Pitolo with clinch knees. Pitolo changes levels, spins him down while avoiding a guillotine. Looking for the back, one hook in and his forearm under the chin. He doesn’t have the angle and Marquez slips out, looking for back control of his own and landing punches. Pitolo stands, tries to change levels again. Two minutes to go.

Marquez avoids a single-leg. He tries to hop in with a knee, gets clinched. He turns into Pitolo and throws heat on the break. Pitolo looking hurt, absorbs a massive knee that prompts a shot. Marquez looks for the guillotine setup again, then transitions to an anaconda choke that forces the tap. What a fight.

Final result: Marquez def. Pitolo by submission (anaconda choke)

185 lbs.: Anthony Hernandez vs. Rodolfo Vieira

Round 1: Vieira shoots in the opening seconds and dumps Hernandez to the mat against the fence. On top in half guard, now hunting the back. Both hooks in. Loses it, takes mount. One minute in. Vieira trying to set up the arm triangle. First two tries are unsuccessful, so he steps over for an armbar as Hernandez tries to scramble up. Good scramble by Hernandez to make it back to his feet, immediately gets dumped back down two minutes in. Right hands from Vieira as Hernandez gets back up. Vieira re-shoots, still can’t get it. Two minutes to go.

They separate and Hernandez comes out swinging, sprawling on a shot and hurting Vieira with a right hand. Vieira shoots and Hernandez forces him to his back with a guillotine, then hunts an anaconda choke. It’s not there, but Hernandez manages to stuff the next shot. Hernandez storming after him with punches and there’s another sprawl. Battering Vieira as he tries to stand. Huge left hand and another right hand but Vieira manages to hit a desperation shot. Hernandez wraps up an inverted triangle in response. 10-9 Hernandez.

Round 2: Hernandez pouring it on, tries a flying knee and gets taken down for it. Vieira tries to jump on his back, but Hernandez slips out the back door. Vieira tries to pull half guard, drops hard punches. Vieira’s completely spent. Hernandez blasts him with punches and a clean head kick on the way up. Hard knee, harder elbows. Hernandez sprawls on another shot, considers an anaconda choke, then falls back for a guillotine, successfully submitting one of the greatest jiu-jitsu players alive.

Final result: Hernandez def. Vieira by submission (guillotine choke)

170 lbs.: Dhiego Lima vs. Belal Muhammad

Round 1: Muhammad on the advance. Good combination into a level change, can’t get it. Head kick attempt. Lima looking for jabs, puts a finger in Muhammad’s eye. One minute in. More jabs from Lima, Muhammad sending out right hands. Overhand right stings Lima’s eye. Good body shots by Muhammad. Lima giving ground, landing jabs, eats a body kick. Round 1: Ewell sends out an early combination. Staying at range so far. Looking for long straight shots. Gutierrez tries a head kick. Counter knee. One minute in. Ewell rips the body, eats a leg kick in return. Gutierrez threatens to spin, tries another high kick. Ewell with a heavy overhand left. Gutierrez tries an Imanari roll two minutes in, settles for a glancing leg kick. Gutierrez with very limited volume so far as Ewell potshots. Triple left hand with two minutes to go.

Rowe continuing to circle, nice cuffing right. Head kick attempt. Green lands a low kick and ties up on the fence. Jockeying for position. Two minutes in. Green completes the takedown into half guard. Rowe responds by sweeping into mount. Hunting for the arm triangle, loses it. Two minutes to go.

North-south for Rowe. Now he retakes mount. Green responds with single-leg X-guard, ends up still on the bottom in half guard. Rowe goes from the back to a triangle attempt.
